Assumed Norms & Reality

I was struck by these spider webs when out on an early morning walk.

They look incredibly round, almost symmetrical…. just like the ones you see in books, portrayed as the norm.

Truth be told though, the reason why I noticed them is that I’ve rarely seen spider webs so symmetrical and round.

It made me think of what we position in the work place, education and wider society as the norm or majority point of view.

If we take the time to look closer and communicate more, we’d probably find that thing are much more diverse than we may assume… even within that which is the assumed norm.

This is in fact one of the reasons why I run the Black History Month Allyships Sessions, to enable people’s understanding at a deeper level beyond the assumptions that exists about black Britain.
